12 Must-Try Street Food in Thailand

by 7:16:00 PM

I just can't believe that it will be 2017 in less than 2 days, like seriously. I have been thinking about what kind of article should I write as the last post for 2016 and I decided to write about food guide of my recent (I guess, lol) trip to Thailand! (yay!) I went to 4 big cities in Thailand during my last trip which are Phuket, Hua Hin, Pattaya and Bangkok, and of course I tried various Thai cuisine from these cities which I'm going to share!

Sanctuary of Truth

As you can see from the picture above, I traveled to a lot of places such as the divine Sanctuary of Truth in Pattaya, super famous Phi-Phi Island in Phuket and Santorini Park in Hua Hin. I do recommend you to visit the Sanctuary of Truth if you visit Pattaya, aside being well-known as the city for nightlife, I was really amused by their handcrafted temple. (keep in mind that it has not been finished yet as of now so you might encounter several workers there)

People said that you've never been to Thailand unless you experience the night market and the street food because Thailand has so many street food to offer. There are a lot of fancy cafes as well but there's something exotic and special about street food, don't you think so? Oh and be prepared to be drenched in sweat as the weather in Thailand was hot and humid especially in the summer time.

Let's move on to the food guide, shall we?

#1 Pork Satay

Pork Satay is one of my favorite street food(s) as it's simply delicious, fragrant, not to mention that it's really cheap as well. There are several varieties of pork satay, I've tried the one coated with sweet sauce and another one with curry sauce.

Pondok Ikan Bakar Khas Kalimantan (Tapos, Depok)

by 12:51:00 PM

As a food blogger, many people think that I only dine and eat at fancy restaurant with steep price and to be honest, that's quite frustrating for me. In fact, I don't mind to eat at humble stall on the street as long as the food is good and I really love finding hidden gems. Talking about hidden gems, have you ever heard about this legendary "Grilled Catfish in Bamboo"? It's one of specialty dish from Pondok Ikan Bakar Khas Kalimantan. It is located at Tapos area, if you come from Jakarta, you can take the exit at Cimanggis gate and you'll arrive here without any problem!

The restaurant itself is quite big and spacious, I reckon they could accommodate up to 100 people in total. I do recommend you to make reservation especially if you are planning to come on weekend because despite it hidden and remote location, the restaurant usually fully filled with crowd. I know it might be hard to believe, but you will believe it once you tried their food. Like people said, there must be a reason why the restaurant is packed with people.

Let's get started with their food!

Ikan Patin Bakar Bambu / Grilled Catfish in Bamboo (IDR 140k/kg)
Grilled Catfish in Bamboo

Grilled Catfish in Bamboo is their specialty food which is basically marinated catfish tucked inside bamboo and then grilled to perfection. The spices that they use to marinate the catfish was indeed special, it was a tad spicy and flavorful. Even better, it managed to get rid the fishy smell of the fish itself. I might not be a big fan of seafood, but strangely, I love this dish.

Mix your rice along with the catfish spice and they indescribable "Sambal Mangga" (Mango Chili). You're going to taste heaven in your mouth! (beware as the chili was quite spicy)

Karedok (IDR 15k)

Karedok is raw mixed vegetable salad drenched in peanut sauce. Not a big fan of veggies (especially the raw one), but this one tasted pretty decent with strong peanut flavor.

Kelapa Muda / Young Coconut Drink (IDR 15k)
Young Coconut Drink

The Young Coconut Drink was served in a huge glass and served along with sugar syrup so you can adjust the sweetness by yourself. The coconut was fresh and refreshing with generous amount of coconut flesh.

Overall, I had a wonderful lunch at Pondok Ikan Bakar Khas Kalimantan, the food tasted wonderful, the place is nice and the service was okay. By the time I write this post, I have been to this place for 3 times, I guess that describes how good the place is. Best of luck!

I seriously never expect much from the main course in the coffee shop, but I was definitely wrong this time. The stuffed chicken was super duper good and delicious! The chicken breast was stuffed with mushrooms, veggies and melted cheese, served in a hot frying pan along with baked tomato and baguette. Oh I'm craving for this now!

Monte Cristo (IDR 66k)

Monte Cristo is basically fried ham and cheese sandwich and I'm glad that they done it perfectly! They were being pretty generous with the cheese and I love the crispiness from the bread crust. I know I have said this frequently, but every food with cheese just can't go wrong!

Fire Pot is a Chinese restaurant which specialized in serving various Chinese cuisine including shabu-shabu. Apparently, Fire Pot is under the same management as well-known restaurant May Star. It is located in the not-so-new shopping mall in North Jakarta, PIK Avenue. If I'm not mistaken, I believe Fire Pot is one of the restaurants that opened when the mall first opened to public.

Let's get started with the soup set, shall we?

They currently have 6 choices of soup which are Laksa Soup, Chicken Broth Soup, Andy's Soto Broth Soup, Special Cheese Soup, Thailand Tom Yum Soup and Korean Kimchi Soup. I chose the Special Cheese Soup as it's pretty unique as I have never had shabu-shabu with cheese sauce before. The result is? Wonderful!

Special Cheese Soup

If you're a cheese lover, I do recommend you to try their Special Cheese Soup. It was a little bit creamy with right amount of cheese flavor. (without being too salty
